Viktoria continued to study the monitor while out of the comer of her eye she watched Madeira’s form disappear down the ladder.

How he reminded her of Leo! Dear, dead Leo. Blunt. Linear. Always hoping darkly for the best but not really expecting it. Skilled in so many things, yet incapable of lying convincingly. Unable, it would seem, to truly hate. Not really qualified to be a Russian. Or anybody, for that matter.

How’d he done it? How had Leo managed to get caught between a couple hundred stubborn, possibly deluded madmen who’d turned the Parliament building into a fortress and two battalions of crack Interior Ministry troops?

Despite his many enthusiasms she knew Leo had no taste for martyrdom. He’d become one only by accident.

Once the killing was done and the fires extinguished, his body was discovered. She’d never been able to learn, without attracting too much attention to herself, exactly how he’d died. Gunshot? Explosion? Fire? She shuddered at what he must have felt.

He was, of course, immediately identified as one of the rebels, as one of those who wished to turn the clock back. But she knew damn well he wasn’t. He was in there trying to make some sort of a deal. Put together some sort of a compromise. God only knew what. And he’d been caught in the middle. Just like Madeira was now. Caught between even more factions than she was sure she could identify.

Fortunately, her affair with Leo hadn’t come to official attention. At least not yet. When and if it did, she was sure they’d let her know.

One way or another.
